Match Report:
Playing as a team for the first time, the game was filled with plenty of other firsts. Although we were outsized by our opponents the team put in a solid fight with lots of drama throughout the game. From initial surprises with field size, pushing fitness levels to the limits and a quick review of the rules of the game; there was a steep learning curve. Somewhere in all the chaos that was literally end-to-end. Matilda O'Brien managed to score our first goal on a brilliant solo run as we headed into half time down by a goal (2-1). Although our passing game looked better and chances were plentiful, the goal keeping and pressure applied by CCUFC was commendable - demonstrating why they were so tough to beat last year! Unfortunately, a combination of fitness and defensive mistakes led to back-to-back goals. Regardless, the fighting spirit of the cyclones was visible until the full time whistle, with not even a single player holding their heads down or their hands on their hips. The girls made plenty of chances, with both Grace and Sophie hitting the frame of the goals on separate occasions. Commendations should also be given to Riley who started her first game as a goalkeeper and produced multiple great 1 on 1 saves. All in all, although we still have some basics to iron out, there were many lessons learnt from the match. Being the first time the club has field an all girls team for this age group, the girls put forward a valiant effort and can only go up from here!
